CHAPTER 8

Ichiro’s house had been lived in recently.

The fridge was well stocked, so was the pantry.

In the car Logan had said nothing about his conversation in the cab, with Tarquin, and I hadn’t pushed. Instead, I’d taken a micro-nap.

Now that we were alone in the house, I felt a little self-conscious.

“If you want to go hunting? I’ll be fine waiting for Ichiro here.”

“Wouldn’t you be worried I’d tried to disappear again?”

“It would be your decision.”

I’d poured the rest of the coffee from the thermos in a microwave to re-heat it.

Logan had removed his hoodie. He was wearing a black muscle t-shirt and dark grey cargo pants.

His skin color was the usual vampire pale tone.

He finally shared some of what Tarquin had just told him.

“Trovann went to the Consortium offices a couple of days ago. He was there during the daytime to avoid dealing with Yared. He has a strong dislike of vampires.”

“So, who did he meet with? Oh, let me guess. Princess Aretha?”

“Yes, princess Aretha. I must admit, I’m kind of impressed by how she handled the whole thing. She found a way to warn Tarquin as discreetly as she could.”

“Oh, through Gilbert?”

Logan nodded.

“Yeah, not too thrilled about that, but in the end, I got the warning.”

“Gilbert is very loyal to Tarquin, Logan. He won’t put him or you in any danger. I know he has a tendency to be very chatty, but he also has ethics and common sense. So, if I may ask, what else did Tarquin have to say?”

“That he doesn’t want to be exposed. Some people might take advantage of the situation to push him away from his position with the Council. He wants me to resolve my issues one way or another.”

I was quite sure he hadn’t worded things this way and had said more.

“What’s your impression of princess Aretha?” Logan now asked.

“She can be trusted.” I said. “She understands being on the fringe, being a goblin. At the same time, I’m sure you know this, she’s just started working with the Consortium, there’s so much she will risk. What did Trovann ask of her?”

“He gave her five days to let him know where I can be found. After, he will seek an official audience with the Council and the Consortium.”

“Five days? Wow, he’s generous.”

“Sometimes, I like your sarcasm.”

“Okay, well, we have five days to come up with your escape route from final death. There are some things I won’t be able to share with you about some of my, hmm, arcane abilities. Are you okay with this?”

“I don’t like it, but I understand. I have to trust you.”

“Is that difficult?”

“Less than I thought.” Then, he added. “Because of Dylan.”

I told him what I had so far.

“I still have a lot to figure out and five days or less to do so.”

“You have a lot already. Will you share any of this with Ichiro?”

I sighed.

“I’m going to have to tell him something.”

“How’s my garage?”

“Last I heard, it was fine, but I should call Curtis to get an update.
